The Gyeongnong building was built in 1937 during the Japanese colonial period, following the typical school architecture style of the time.

It was built with red bricks and a wooden truss roof, a symmetrical building.

In 2012, a detailed safety inspection was conducted, and the building received an E rating, requiring immediate closure.

There was also an opinion to demolish the Gyeongnong building, which symbolizes the Gyeongnong era, to clear the remnants of Japanese imperialism.

However, the opposition to the demolition of the Gyeongnong building was fierce among members of the school.

The Gyeongnong building was registered as a cultural property of Seoul, holding significant value as a historical document of modern architecture from the Japanese colonial period.

As most of the people who built the Gyeongnong building during the Gyeongnong era and the students who studied at Gyeongnong were Koreans under colonial rule,

There was also a perspective that viewing the Gyeongnong building solely as a remnant of Japanese imperialism was inappropriate.

In the end, Seoul National University of Technology decided to renovate the Gyeongnong building.

Initially, the focus was on improving structural safety and thermal insulation, but during construction, a proposal by Lee Chung-gi, a professor of architecture, was

adopted, shifting the direction from simple renovation to remodeling.

Under the leadership of Professor Lee, the Gyeongnong building regained its red brick appearance, and the ceiling was removed to increase the ceiling height,

exposing the original wooden truss.

Through this remodeling, which was close to restoration, the Gyeongnong building was reborn.
