Cheonggyecheon Gwangtonggyo Bridge
Address: 55-2, Seorin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul
The oldest bridge built of stone.
In the early Joseon Dynasty, during the reign of King Taejo, it was built of earth, but it collapsed due to heavy rains. It was rebuilt with stone in August 1410 (the 10th year of King Taejong's reign).
When it was rebuilt, it was made of 'stone objects' from Jeongneung, and there's a hidden story behind it.
When King Taejo attempted to pass on his throne to Prince Bangseok, the son of Queen Shindeok, Queen Kang (1356-1396),
King Taejong, enraged by this, instigated the Rebellion of the Princes, killing Prince Bangseok and ascending to the throne.
When Queen Shindeok's tomb was relocated, some of the stones were moved to a place where everyone could step on them, and those stones were all placed upside down.
It can be seen as a trace of a king of Joseon, who based his rule on filial piety (Hyo) and loyalty (Chung), taking revenge on his parents due to a sense of betrayal and anger towards a woman he once treated like his own mother.
It's famous as the place where people would play the 'stepping on the bridge' game on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, and Gwangtonggyo was said to be the busiest spot in Hanyang during that time.
