Alter St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof (Cemetery)
Established in 1846, Alter St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof is a historical cemetery located in the Schöneberg district of Berlin.
Originally a cemetery for parishioners, it opened to the general public in the late 19th century as the number of prominent officials and scientists residing in the area increased.
In 1909, a concrete funeral chapel was built. The design of the cemetery and chapel exemplifies Prussian imperial architecture.
However, a portion of the cemetery was demolished due to Berlin's expansion plans during World War II.
After the war, Allied attacks further damaged and destroyed many graves.
Following the demolition of the main church in 2001, the cemetery has been managed by the city of Berlin and preserved as an important historical and cultural site reflecting Berlin's past.
Approximately 60 graves have been designated as cultural heritage sites, and the cemetery serves as a space for citizens to relax and learn about history.
